2 Killed Crossing I-805 Near Border

Two men, both believed to be undocumented immigrants, were struck and killed by cars in two separate incidents as they attempted to cross Interstate 805 near the U.S.-Mexican border, authorities said Saturday.

Throughout the border area, authorities say, foreigners who have clandestinely entered the United States are frequently struck by vehicles as they attempt to negotiate major roads on foot, often with the cover of darkness.

The identities of both men killed Friday in the latest incidents remained unknown Saturday.

The first death occurred at about 10:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 805, near the old Highway 117 overpass, authorities said. A car hit one of a group of people crossing the roadway, a spokeswoman for the California Highway Patrol said.

The second incident occurred at 11:13 p.m. when a hit-and-run vehicle struck a pedestrian on I-805 near Palm Avenue, officials said.

The CHP was investigating both incidents.
