Pitcher Dwight Gooden of the New York Mets says in legal documents that the city of Tampa inadequately trained police officers he claims punched and taunted him in December, 1986.
Gooden is suing the city of Tampa and three police officers who arrested him after a scuffle.
The officers are, in turn, suing him for $1 million each, claiming he endangered them and that he and his lawyer has defamed them.
The suits stem from the confrontation that involved Gooden, 4 companions and 22 Tampa police officers. Gooden pleaded no contest in January 1987 to charges of resisting arrest with violence and battery on a law enforcement officer.
