Baldwin Park : County Renewal Loan
The County Board of Supervisors has approved a $7-million short-term loan to the Baldwin Park Redevelopment Agency as seed money for a 13-acre shopping center on Ramona Boulevard which would be the city’s downtown centerpiece.
The county-administered loan, which must be repaid within 18 months, will be used to buy property, demolish buildings and relocate occupants, county officials said. It will be provided through a federal Housing and Urban Development program for economically blighted areas.
The 180,000-square-foot project, which will include a large supermarket and about 40 shops and restaurants, is expected to cost nearly $19 million, said John Hemer, community development director.
“This project is very important,” Hemer said. “It would be the first substantial retail development in the last 20 years in downtown Baldwin Park.”
Construction is expected to begin this summer with completion by mid-1989, Hemer said.
