Canal Lining

Share

It’s unfortunate that the Imperial Irrigation District opposes legislation that would help conserve water and hence resolve Southern California’s water shortage problems (“What a Waste,” editorial, March 1).

Congress should ignore this plea to continue the waste of millions of gallons of water into the desert sands every day. Rep. Mel Levine’s (D-Santa Monica) bill authorizing the concrete lining of the All-American Canal offers advantages that should not be disregarded.

Communities in Southern California are rapidly approaching the time when they will need that water and are offering to pay for the entire cost of conserving it. Farmers in Imperial do not have the need for the water and thus do not believe it is a good investment.

Swift congressional approval for the lining of the All-American Canal is in the best interest of all Californians.
