Two armed men robbed an East San Diego bank Thursday, making off with more than $30,000, police said.

The two men entered the Citicorp Savings Bank in the 6400 block of El Cajon Boulevard at 9:40 a.m., police spokesman Dave Cohen said.

The men ordered everyone in the bank to get down on the floor, not to talk or answer the phones, “or else we’ll kill two of you,” Cohen quoted one of the bandits as saying.

The robbers then went into the vault and got the money themselves, said Sgt. Hal Goudarzi of the department’s robbery division.

The two men escaped on foot, dropping some of their take in the bank’s lobby and on the street.

No shots were fired, and no one was injured.

Citicorp spokeswoman Tonia Freeman would not comment on the incident except to say: “We were real pleased that no customers and employees were harmed.”

This was the sixth bank robbery in San Diego this month and by far the largest, police said.

According to the FBI, the average take in local bank robberies over the past year was $1,200. The last robbery of this magnitude took place last May, when $34,000 was stolen from a credit union, the FBI said.
