Victory in Las Cienagas Handicap Third in Row for Hairless Heiress
Hairless Heiress raced to her third straight victory, coming through on the rail Saturday to take the $85,800 Las Cienagas Handicap on the turf at Santa Anita.
The Las Cienagas was the first of a weekend pair of grass races highlighted by today’s $250,000 San Luis Rey Stakes, which is 1 1/2 miles.
Jockey Gary Stevens kept the favored Hairless Heiress close to the leaders in the downhill portion of Saturday’s 6 1/2-furlong race. The winner gained the lead turning into the stretch and held off the longshot Chick Or Two, ridden by Ray Sibille. Aromacor was third in the field of 12.
Hairless Heiress was timed in 1:15 and, as the favorite of the crowd of 32,416, paid $5.80, $4.40 and $3.80.
Chick Or Two returned $17.40 and $9.40 while Aromacor paid $8.60.
The victory was worth $52,050. Hairless Heiress had won her last two starts on the sprint turf course and now has 11 victories in 28 lifetime starts to boost her earnings to more than $260,000.
