A Northwest Airlines jet on a flight from San Diego was evacuated Sunday night when residual fuel vapors briefly ignited, causing what witnesses thought was a fire, authorities said.

Four passengers were injured slightly while evacuating the Boeing 727 shortly after it landed at 8:20 p.m., and the incident forced the airport to close for about 20 minutes, according to Northwest and airport spokesmen.

Flight 288, originating in San Diego with 144 passengers and seven crew members, landed routinely at Metropolitan Airport, Northwest spokesman William Wren said.
