Oscars for Technical Achievement

The first Oscars of the season were handed out Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel during the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences scientific and technical Academy Awards ceremony. The Oscars were given for “devices, methods, formulas, discoveries or inventions” aiding the motion-picture industry. Winners:

Academy Award of Merit (for achievements that have influenced and advanced film making): Bernard Kuhl, Werner Block and the OSRAM GmbH research and development department.

Scientific and engineering awards: Willi Burth and Kinotone Corp.; Ronald Barker, Chester Schuler and the Montage Group; Colin Mossman and Rank Film Laboratories’ Development Group; Eastman Kodak Co., two awards; Fritz Gabriel Bauer, Zoran Perisic, Courier Films Ltd., and Carl Zeiss Co.

Technical achievement awards: Ioan Allen, Dolby Laboratories Inc.; John Eppolito, Wally Gentleman, William Mesa, Les Robley and Geoff Williamson; Jan Jacobsen; Thaine Morris and David Pier; Tadeuz Krzanowski, Industrial Light & Magic Inc., and Dan Norris and Tim Cook, Norris Film Products.
