All-Star shortstop Ozzie Smith of the St. Louis Cardinals criticized Manager Whitey Herzog and former teammate Jack Clark in an interview published in the April issue of Gentlemen’s Quarterly.

In the article, Smith blamed Herzog for not instilling confidence in the Cardinals during last year’s World Series. The Minnesota Twins defeated St. Louis in seven games.

“I felt that the team needed a vote of confidence--for the manager to say, ‘You guys are as good or better than they are,’ ” Smith said. “But Whitey kept saying, ‘I don’t know why we’re here,’ like he expected us to lose.”

Smith said Clark should have tried to play in the World Series despite an ankle injury. Clark signed with the New York Yankees during the off-season.
