San Clemente Island a Hot Spot for Yellowtail

Share

Spring surface fishing is off to a fast start as schools of yellowtail have made an appearance near some of Southern California’s offshore islands.

San Clemente Island has been the hot spot so far. Boats using live squid as bait have been bringing back decent numbers of the prized fish, mostly in the 20-pound class.

Wednesday, 25 anglers aboard L.A. Harbor Sportfishing’s Outer Limits and Shogun returned from the island with 20 yellowtail averaging a little more than 20 pounds. Lauren Spencer of Indio caught one weighing 30 pounds 6 ounces.

Most fishermen are targeting largemouth bass these days and Vail Lake in Riverside County has been producing the best action for good-sized fish.

Phil McMahon of San Dimas topped the week with a 14-pound 3-ounce bass he caught using a dark plastic worm. Jerry Piper of Downey was next with one weighing 12-pounds 13-ounces.
