College Spring Sports : Devers Facing Busy Schedule in CSUN Meet

Gail Devers of UCLA, who was ranked seventh in the world in the 100 meters in 1987, heads the list of competitors in today’s Northridge Invitational track and field meet at Cal State Northridge.

Devers, ranked in the top 10 nationally in the 100 (second), long jump (seventh) and 200 (ninth), is entered in those events along with the 100-meter low hurdles.

More than 50 schools and clubs are expected to compete in the meet, which starts with the women’s javelin at 9 a.m. and concludes with the men’s invitational 5,000 meters at 5:45 p.m.

In other track:

Einar Cronstedt of Pt. Loma, who scored 6,442 points in the two-day event, came from behind Friday to win the Northridge Invitational decathlon at Cal State Northridge.

Elaine Bergman, competing unattached, won the women’s heptathlon with 5,082 points.

BASEBALL

CS Northridge 12, UC Riverside 4--Lenn Gilmore led the Matador attack with five hits and four runs batted in.

Robert Wheatcroft (1-4) went the distance for Northridge (12-22, 3-6 in conference play).

Cosumnes River 6, Moorpark 1-- Moorpark (6-15) had just four hits in a second-round loss in the Channel Coast tournament game.

Losing pitcher Paul Perce (1-2) gave up nine hits. Tim Simonsgard hit a homer for the Raiders.
