Prep Baseball : Valencia Switches Off Edison’s Lights Twice, 8-7, 7-6

John Daugherty grounded a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Valencia High School a 7-6 victory and a doubleheader sweep of Edison Saturday at Valencia.

The Tigers (5-4-1) defeated Edison (5-5-1) in the first game, 8-7.

In the second game, Valencia was tied with Edison, 6-6, going into the seventh inning. Mike Edwards led off the seventh with a walk and reached second on a wild pitch by losing pitcher Rod Simonson (0-2). Simonson then walked Keef Leasure intentionally but then threw a wild pitch to advance the runners to second and third. Simonson walked Anthony Davis intentionally to load the bases, which set up Daugherty for his game-winning hit.

Valencia’s Kelly Garrett (1-0) picked up the victory in his first pitching effort of the season. Garrett pitched the final four innings, giving up one run on two hits and striking out four.

In the first game, Leasure’s game-winning sacrifice fly in the ninth inning also came with the bases loaded and none out. After losing pitcher Jason Serafin (0-1) walked Rudy Lopez to start the inning, winning pitcher Edwards (1-0) singled to left to send Lopez to second.

Lopez kept going to third and Edwards to second when Charger left fielder Jason Alston mishandled Edwards’ hit for an error. Serafin then walked Davis intentionally, setting up Leasure for his game-winning sacrifice fly to center.

Alston’s error was one of six committed by the Chargers in the first game. Valencia, which committed five errors in the first game, had nine in the doubleheader, as did Edison.

“That is ugly baseball,” said Kevin McConnell, Valencia coach. “It wasn’t a real good high school game, that’s for sure. We didn’t play that well in either game, and we’re lucky to have come out of this with two wins.”

Said Edison Coach Paul Harrell: “We played terrible, plain and simple. We made so many mistakes today that it was embarrassing.”

Edison, which trailed, 7-1, after two innings in the first game, tied the score with two runs in the third and four runs in the fourth. Three of the Chargers’ fourth-inning runs were scored on Mark Whitcher’s home run to left-center.

In other nonleague games:

Katella 9, Magnolia 7--Ted Brown tripled in Shawn Schmidt in the fifth inning to tie the score at 7-7, and Brandon Boone followed with a single to give host Katella (7-6) the victory. Jim Rosas saved the game for winner Shawn Schmidt (2-0).

Anaheim 7, Sunny Hills 5--Sunny Hills (5-8) led, 4-1, but with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, Ryan Jara of Anaheim (6-6) hit a ball to center that turned into a two-base error that cleared the bases and tied the score. Joey Young hit a two-out, three-run home run in the sixth to give Anaheim the victory at Glover Field. Young had two hits and four RBIs, and Mark McGuire of Sunny Hills had a home run and a double with two RBIs. Pete Gonzalez (3-2) picked up the victory for Anaheim.

El Dorado 17-11, Brea-Olinda 1-4--El Dorado had 15 hits in the first game and 13 in the second game for the sweep at Brea. Bruce Petillo went 4 for 4 with 2 home runs and 5 RBIs in the first game. Chris Olson and Scott Tomko each added homers in the first game for El Dorado. Brea-Olinda is 2-10-1.

Fountain Valley 2-12, Rolling Hills 3-3--Fountain Valley (6-7) scored seven runs in the bottom of the second inning on six singles, two walks and an error to gain a split with Rolling Hills. David Schautschick, who went 2 for 4 with three RBIs in the second game, had a two-run single in the second. Jeff Watts went 2 for 4 with a run scored; Jeff Higbee 2 for 4 with 1 run scored and 1 RBI, and George Hoffstaetter 2 for 3 with 1 RBI in the second game. Jeff Hale (1-2) picked up the victory for Fountain Valley. Mark Dodd hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning of the first game for the Barons.

Pacifica 3-7, La Habra 2-6--Todd Long (4-1) pitched a two-hitter and struck out five for the victory in the first game for host Pacifica (9-3). Both of La Habra’s runs were unearned in the first game. Pacifica was down, 6-5, with the bases loaded in the seventh inning of the second game when winning pitcher Oscar Ravello (1-0) hit a two-run single to give the Mariners their ninth consecutive victory. La Habra fell to 7-5. Kevin Ashworth went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs in the second game.

Rancho Alamitos 5-2, Cypress 4-5 (first game 8 innings)--Mike Willy opened the bottom of the eighth inning for Rancho Alamitos (7-7) by singling and taking second on an error by the left fielder. He then stole third. Cypress intentionally walked two batters around the inning’s first out to load the bases. Paul Lee’s infield single scored Willy. Jason Livingston struck out seven and walked two for Cypress in the second game.
