Marco Lucchinelli of Italy won the first round of the World Superbike championship when Italian teammate Davide Gardozzi fell on the last lap in the second 30-lap race at Donington, England.

Gardozzi won the first race by more than a second from Lucchinelli and seemed set for an overall victory on aggregate time. But on the last lap, he pushed a little too hard and ended up on the grass only half a mile from the finish line.

Lucchinelli holds a lead of more than 47 seconds over Fred Merkel of the United States, while Joey Dunlop of Northern Ireland, who has won the formula one world championship five times, is third, another 10 seconds behind.
