The Los Angeles County coroner’s office has identified a corpse found Friday at Los Angeles International Airport as Elinor Massey, the Torrance civil service commissioner who was reported missing more than a month ago.
Coroner’s investigators identified the decomposed body using dental records provided by Massey’s husband, Fred.
Massey, 43, was last seen on March 5 when she left her home, saying she was going shopping. Her body was discovered in the family’s Toyota station wagon, parked in a long-term parking lot at LAX.
Massey had suffered from depression since 1983 when she developed chronic back pain. She had attempted suicide twice, her husband said, and empty bottles of prescription medicine were found near the body. A determination of the cause of death is pending.
Civil service commissioners oversee selection, promotion and discipline for all civil service employees in Torrance. The City Council will hold a hearing on May 3 to interview applicants to replace Massey.
