Easy Way to Protect Sheep

Share

Hank Heeber III, the Agoura rancher who defended the trapping and killing of scores of wild animals, should bring his act up to date.

The latest thing in livestock protection--especially sheep--is dogs. You don’t need a Basque sheepherder. All you need is this big dog that grows up with sheep and is trained to protect them. As an alternative to trapping and poisoning, it has been used in many places in this country with great success. The dogs are imported from Europe. Time magazine had an article on the subject a year or so ago.

In an era when we’re running out of undeveloped land and the wildlife that goes with it, it’s a crying shame to read about this decimation of gray foxes, bobcats and coyotes. How many of us have ever seen a bobcat or a gray fox? If you’re lucky enough to meet one of these beautiful creatures, it’s a great day in your life. These are wild and free animals and have as much right to be let alone as Hank Heeber III. If he loses a few lambs, let him write it off as a cost of doing business. If what he’s doing is legal, then the law should be changed.

Hank Heeber III, get yourself a sheep dog. It’ll cost you a lot less than the $7,000 you say you lose every year.
