College Roundup : Oberdank Stays Hot for UC Irvine

Jeff Oberdank had two hits and two RBIs to lead UC Irvine to an 11-4 victory over the Master’s Wednesday in a nonconference baseball game at Anteater Field. The victory ended Irvine’s five-game losing streak.

Oberdank, a senior second baseman from Fullerton College, had a two-run single to cap a six-run fifth inning, which put Irvine ahead, 11-4.

It was the 24th game this season in which Oberdank has had two or more hits. He is hitting .383 (72 of 188) and is 16 hits short of tying the Irvine single-season record of 88 set by Mike Hirano in 1979.

John Seeburger had a double in the fifth inning for Irvine and extended his hitting streak to 8 games.

Mike Calvert (2-0) pitched the first five innings for the victory.

In Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. softball:

Cal State Fullerton 3-2, Cal Poly Pomona 5-1--Seventh-ranked Fullerton (34-10, 9-5) gained a split with No. 12 Cal Poly Pomona (29-8, 7-3) when Cathi Hall singled home Debbie Schneider in the sixth inning of the second game at Titan Field.

In the first game, the Titans were ahead, 3-2, in the sixth, but Pomona’s Allison Stowell lined a two-out bases-loaded double to center field to score three runs. Kris Rokocz (12-0) won the first game for Pomona and Chris Gage (3-2) lost in relief of Anjie Bryant.

Sophomore Janis Okerlund (8-1), from El Toro High School, got the victory in the second game, and Nicky Luce (12-5), from Cypress High School, took the loss.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Whittier 6, Christ College Irvine 3--Christ College Irvine (5-13) won only two singles matches at Irvine.

In nonconference women’s tennis:

Whittier 7, Christ College Irvine 2--Christ College Irvine (0-10) had only five players because two players were sick and one injured, but it managed to take the No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles. Whittier wrapped up the match by sweeping the singles matches.
