An attempted robbery of six illegal immigrants ended when one man was shot twice by a group of border bandits, San Diego Police Department spokesman Bill Robinson said Friday.

The unidentified victim was taken to UCSD Medical Center, where he was treated for gunshot wounds to the left shoulder and right thigh and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The attack took place shortly before midnight Thursday when the six migrants--attempting to illegally cross the U.S. border--were surrounded by three or four bandits armed with a rifle and machetes at Tia Juana Street and Willow Road, one mile west of the San Ysidro border checkpoint. The bandit with the rifle then opened fire. The other migrants escaped injury, Robinson said.

The bandits remained at large Friday.

In what police believe is a related incident, the body of Jose Rivas Guerrero, 24, was found shortly after 1 p.m. Friday near Monument and Dairy Mart Roads by the Border Patrol.

Robinson said police believe Guerrero may have been killed during the early morning attack, although their investigation has not been completed.
