The city of Cerritos is ranked the country’s most ethnically diverse community, according to a study that ranks Los Angeles County sixth, behind Manhattan and several San Francisco Bay Area counties.

The Bay Area, with five of the 10 most ethnically diverse counties in the nation, topped the regional list in the study conducted by two Cal State Northridge researchers and released by the Assn. of American Geographers.

The 10 most diverse counties, in descending order, were: San Francisco, Hudson, N.J., San Mateo, Manhattan, Alameda, Los Angeles, Honolulu, Santa Clara, Solano, and Maui, Hawaii.

The study, which surveyed 14 ethnic groups, based diversity rankings on an index of probability that two randomly selected people would be of different ethnic backgrounds. The researchers used 1980 U.S. Census data to set the rankings.
