Greg Haugen regained his International Boxing Federation lightweight title only 30 minutes after he lost it.
Miguel Santana’s arm was raised in victory in the ring Monday night at Tacoma, Wash., and it wasn’t until Haugen went to Santana’s dressing room to congratulate him that both fighters learned the decision had been reversed.
Referee Jim Cassidy had stopped the fight and declared Santana the winner when Haugen could not answer the bell for the 12th round because of a severe cut in his right eyebrow, caused by an unintentional butt to the head.
Cassidy said later, however, that he had made a mistake. He had been under the impression that Santana was leading on the score cards.
The rule on head butts is that the fighter leading is the winner if a head butt forces the fight to end.
A rematch is anticipated by IBF officials.
