Tennis Roundup : McEnroe’s Return a Success as He Wins Twice
John McEnroe, playing his first major tournament in seven months, won two matches Thursday to move into the quarterfinals of the $752,500 Suntory Japan Open tennis tournament at Tokyo.
McEnroe eliminated Greg Holmes, 6-3, 6-4, in a second-round match and then defeated Derrick Rostagno, 6-2, 6-3, in the third round. Also advancing to the quarterfinals was defending champion Stefan Edberg, who defeated Matt Anger, 6-2, 6-2, and Scott Davis, 6-2, 7-5.
Wednesday’s matches were rained out, and the second and third rounds were held Thursday.
In the day’s major upset, Shuzo Matsuoka of Japan stopped second-seeded Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia, 7-6, 6-3. Matsuoka will play McEnroe today.
McEnroe is making his first appearance in a major tournament since being suspended for two months for temperamental outbursts in the U.S. Open last September. He has since been sidelined with back trouble.
Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova reached the quarterfinals of a $300,000 women’s tournament at Amelia Island, Fla. Graf beat Donna Faber, 6-1, 6-1, and Navratilova eliminated Sandra Cecchini of Italy, 6-0, 6-3.
