Prep Baseball : Roundup : Three-Run Sixth Helps University Upset Saddleback, 5-4

University High School rallied from a 3-1 deficit with three runs in the sixth inning and hung on to upset Saddleback, 5-4, in a Sea View League baseball game Friday at University.

University (4-13, 1-6) used five consecutive singles to score the three runs in the sixth inning.

In the seventh, Dave Dieter reached second base after Saddleback left fielder George Canham lost his fly ball in the sun. Scott McCorgery followed with an RBI single to put University ahead, 5-3.

Saddleback rallied for a run in the bottom of the seventh but could come no closer.

Jason Williams (1-0) struck out 4 and walked 2 in 3 innings of relief. Saddleback pitcher Sean Therien (4-3) struck out 10 in the loss, and teammate Neil Carter went 3 for 4 with 2 stolen bases and 2 RBIs. Saddleback, ranked 10th in the Orange County Sportswriters’ Assn. poll, is 12-5, 6-1.

In other Sea View League games:

Estancia 3, Newport Harbor 0--Conrad Colby pitched a three-hitter for host Estancia, which scored in the first, second and sixth innings. Dan Dougherty singled, stole second and third and scored on a ground out by Frank Herman in the first inning. Sean Nichols and Mark Hartley were hit by pitches to open the second and Nichols later scored on a wild pitch. Jason White had an RBI single in the sixth for Estancia (12-5, 5-2). Newport Harbor is 3-14, 1-6.

Tustin 6, Corona del Mar 2--George Menges went 2 for 4 with a 3-run homer and an RBI single to lead host Tustin (12-5, 6-1). Monte Jones (6-2) threw a three-hitter, striking out nine, for the victory. Curt Ehamann had an RBI single for Corona del Mar (4-8, 2-5).

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 8, Loara 3--Eddie Keller and Chris Olsen each hit home runs to lead host El Dorado (15-2, 6-1). Keller had three RBIs and Olsen had two. Peter Jenicki (4-1) went the distance, striking out eight, for the victory. Rene Ayala went 3 for 3 for El Dorado. Craig Clayton had a home run and two RBIs for Loara (7-8, 2-5).

Los Alamitos 4, Katella 2--Greg Pirkl went 3 for 3 with 2 doubles and an RBI to lead Los Alamitos (15-3, 6-1) at Boysen Park. Pirkl’s second double broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning. Winnie Wolf (6-1) went the distance, striking out six, for the victory. Dennis Briggs went 2 for 3 with an RBI for Katella (8-9, 2-5).

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 18, Buena Park 1--Vince Chavira had 3 hits and 4 RBIs to lead Fullerton (12-5, 5-2) at Buena Park. Collin Milligan had three RBIs and Brent Bice had a grand slam for Fullerton. Carlos Martinez (4-2) pitched six innings, striking out six, for the victory.

La Habra 11, Sunny Hills 0--David Stevens (3-3) threw a three-hitter with six strikeouts and hit a two-run home run for visiting La Habra (10-5, 6-1). La Habra led, 4-0, going into the fourth inning. Rob Utz hit a grand slam for La Habra, which added seven more runs in the fourth inning. Tim Moore had 2 hits, stole his 15th base and had 3 RBIs for La Habra. Sunny Hills is 6-11, 2-5.

Sonora 14, Troy 7--Host Sonora (9-8, 5-2) had six-run innings in the first and fourth. Sonora’s Kyle Schaetzo hit a two-run home run (his seventh) and a two-run single, and Mitch Kaylor went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Troy’s Karakes went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs. Bob Russell of Troy went 2 for 4.

In the Olympic League:

Valley Christian 10, Southern California Christian 1--Lance Havel pitched only four innings but struck out 10 for Valley Christian (10-4, 4-1) at Southern California Christian. Havel went 2 for 2 and scored 3 runs, Brad VanMeeteren went 3 for 3 with a double, 2 runs scored, 2 RBIs and 2 stolen bases and Frank Hong had 2 doubles and 3 RBIs. Brent VanKampen hit a home run in the fourth inning for Valley Christian.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 9, Brea-Olinda 7--Anthony Davis and Robert Navarette each had two RBIs in a five-run fifth inning that gave host Valencia (9-4-1, 5-1-1) the lead. Brea-Olinda (5-11-1, 2-4-1) led, 5-4, going into the bottom of the fifth, when Davis hit a two-run homer. Navarette capped the inning with a two-run single. Navarette (4-0) pitched three innings of relief for the victory, with Mike Edwards getting a save. Edwards also had a two-run homer.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 3, Trabuco Hills 2--Ron Kortman (3-4) pitched five innings for the victory, with Mike Smedes going the final two for visiting Laguna Hills (8-8, 5-2). Chris Sheff and Jun Honda each had two hits for Laguna Hills. Sheff also drove in a run. Laguna Hills led, 3-0, going into the fifth, but John Barnes and Mike Canett hit back-to-back home runs for Trabuco Hills (7-6, 4-3).

Orange 7 Laguna Beach 5 (8 innings)--Rich Prater and Emilio Avila both had two-run singles in the top of the eighth inning for Orange (9-7, 5-2). Danny Lane hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning for Laguna Beach (2-9, 2-5). Brian Smith (5-2) went distance, striking out six. Skip Tanner hit a solo home run in the first inning for Orange.

Woodbridge 9, Costa Mesa 8--Dave Klimkiewicz capped a five-run seventh inning by singling in the winning run for Woodbridge at Alton Park in Irvine. Doug Pryor (1-0) pitched two innings in relief for the victory. Mike Goodman had two hits and two RBIs for Woodbridge (5-11, 3-4).
