Red, White, Blue Period for Artists

Share

Expect a lot of red, white and blue art projects today at this year’s Arts Festival Day at the Children’s Museum of La Habra. The museum has been working with the La Habra Bicentennial Committee on the U.S. Constitution, so there is bound to be a mix of artistic and patriotic fervor at the many crafts booths.

Children of all ages can spend the day moving from one drop-in workshop to another, staying as long as the subject holds their attention and then moving on. These workshops, set up all over the park outside the museum, will include easel painting, clay play, helium balloon painting, wood sculpting and kite making. There is a specially supervised art space for toddlers.

Last year, artist Michael Marks set up his giant inflatable snake for children to decorate. It was a big hit, so Marks is back again with a new sculpture, this one a secret but patriotic design. Once “installed,” everyone can take felt markers to add personal touches.

Live performances are scheduled hourly at the outdoor park stage and the Depot Playhouse: folk music by John Yeiser, hand and rod puppets with Judy Sofer, storytelling with Kashka Warden and Chinese dancers. Minnie and Mickey Mouse will work the crowd. Fast-food booths will offer hot dogs, sodas and popcorn. Everything except the food is free, including admission to the museum, which is housed in an old railroad depot at 301 S. Euclid St. Information: (213) 905-9793.
