Several Olympians Are in the Field for Cycling

The fourth Bud Light La Jolla Grand Prix today has attracted a stellar field of cyclists: defending champion and Olympic bronze medal cyclist Thurlow Rodgers of Van Nuys, Olympic gold medalists Alexi Grewal of Boulder, Colo., and Steve Hegg of Dana Point, and 1986 Grand Prix champion Jeff Pierce of San Diego.

The race will begin at the corner of Girard and Silverado streets in La Jolla. The women’s race, which will be 33 laps/20 miles, will begin at 1:45 p.m. The 66-lap, 40-mile men’s race will start at 3:15.

TRACK AND FIELD

San Diego State’s Sharie Green set a school record in the triple jump with a leap of 40-feet 6 3/4-inches in a triangular meet at UC Irvine.

The previous mark of 39-11 1/2, set last year, was held by Gaylen Aames, who finished second in the triple jump.

Fresno State won the men’s meet with 76 1/2 points, UC Irvine was second with 65 1/2 and SDSU third with 58. Fresno also won the women’s meet, scoring 77 points. UC Irvine was second with 47 and SDSU was third with 42.

Connie Navarro and Shawndel Reddic set school records as the Point Loma Nazarene women’s track team won a five-team meet at Point Loma.

PLNC finished with 101 points. UC San Diego was second at 69, followed by Christ College of Irvine (22), Biola (11) and Master’s College (5).

Reddic set a high-jump record of 5-feet 9 1/8-inches, breaking the 5-8 set by Jamie Robinson in 1987. Reddic also won the 100-meter hurdles (15.04). Navarro ran 12.34 in the 100 meters, beating the 12.64 set by Sherrie Baldomir in 1982. Navarro also won the long jump with a leap of 17-3 3/4.

PLNC won the men’s meet, scoring 127 points, and UCSD was second with 83. Biola scored 36 and was followed by Christ College of Irvine (35) and Master’s College (12). Inor Cronstedt led Point Loma with victories in the javelin (175-4) and the pole vault (14-5).

BASEBALL

Ray Plantier and Alberto Rodriguez both hit three-run home runs to lead U.S. International University to an 11-6 nonconference victory over visiting UC Riverside (25-16).

Wally Trice went the distance, striking out nine, to improve his record to 11-3.

Rob Brown allowed four hits and struck out six to lead San Diego State to a 6-1 nonconference victory over visiting Oral Roberts.

Harry Henderson was 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs for SDSU (30-13-1). Oral Roberts is 20-23.

Javier Murillo hit two home runs to lead Azusa Pacific, ranked 13th among NAIA teams, to a sweep of Point Loma Nazarene College in Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader at Point Loma.

Murillo hit a two-run homer in the first game to lead Azusa Pacific (29-8, 11-4) to a 11-2 victory. Murillo hit a three-run homer in the first inning of the second game as Azusa Pacific won, 8-3.

Tony Nabinksy hit a bases-empty shot in the first for PLNC (11-15, 4-12) in the second game.

SOFTBALL

UCLA pitcher Lisa Longaker avenged her only loss of the season with a 1-0 nonconference victory over U.S. International University Saturday at USIU.

USIU defeated Longaker (19-1) earlier this season, 1-0.

Top-ranked UCLA needed an unearned run in the first inning as USIU pitcher Karen Winkler allowed the Bruins (38-5) just three hits and struck out eight. UCLA won the second game 3-1.

Michelle Wesson pitched a three-hitter to lead San Diego State to a 1-0 victory over Nevada Las Vegas in the first game of a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. doubleheader at SDSU. Nevada Las Vegas (16-13, 7-11) won the second game, 4-1.

RUNNING

Alex Miranda of San Diego won the 33rd Fontana Half Marathon with a time of 1:05:05. The race is the oldest continuous half-marathon in California.
