‘The Emperor’s Naked Army Marches On’

Japan, 1987, 122 minutes, 7:45 p.m. This documentary is thoroughly engrossing--and equally disturbing. It centers on Kenzo Okuzaki’s determination to hold Emperor Hirohito responsible for the conduct of World War II while he investigates the deaths of two comrades in New Guinea, apparently executed by officers after the surrender. Film maker Kazuo Hara, in pursuing the subject of obsessive behavior, exploits a demonstrably unstable individual. Finally, Hara shares Okuzaki’s belief that the end justifies any means.

RECOMMENDED.
