With its “2 On the Town” magazine series leading the way, KCBS-TV Channel 2 once again garnered more Los Angeles Emmy Award nominations than any other local station as announced Thursday by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

KCBS collected 56 nominations, including 16 for “2 on the Town.” Though the show is out of production and probably will not be on the air past this summer, “2 on the Town” captured more nominations than any other series.

KCET Channel 28’s documentary series “California Stories” earned nine nominations, while KCBS’ now-defunct entertainment series “Friday at Sunset” captured seven.

KNBC-TV Channel 4 received 33 nominations, including four for best mini-docs on its local newscasts. Its series on an AIDS hospice in Long Beach earned the station five separate nominations. KABC-TV Channel 7 collected 25 nominations, one-third fewer than last year.

Winners of the 40th annual Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards will be announced May 21 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

KTTV Channel 11 led the pack among independents with 23 nominations. Public-TV outlet KCET collected 20. KHJ-TV Channel 9 captured 11 nominations, including four for its coverage of the Los Angeles Lakers. KTLA Channel 5 received nine, while KCOP Channel 13 garnered three.

Independent and network-owned stations compete separately in many categories, together in others. All told, the Academy handed out 194 nominations.

Michael Meadows, executive producer of “2 on the Town,” received eight nominations, the most for any individual. Eric Schotz, Jeff Androsky and Carol Sherman each earned six nominations for various specials they produced for KABC. Teya Ryan, a producer for “California Stories,” collected four.
