The National Collegiate Athletic Assn. upheld sanctions against Cleveland State University for recruiting violations in its dealings with 7-foot 6-inch Manute Bol and two other prospective basketball players from Africa.
Bol was not named in the NCAA’s report, but Cleveland State officials have said that the penalties stemmed from their dealings with Bol, Deng-Deng Nhial, who is also from Sudan, and a third prospective player from Somalia.
Cleveland State brought Bol and Nhial to Cleveland in May 1983. Bol, who plays for the Washington Bullets, never enrolled at Cleveland State because he didn’t speak English well enough. Nhial enrolled but did not play basketball. Bol and Nhial later played for University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, a Division II school.
