More Oscar Troubles

Calendar’s two interesting Oscar-oriented articles (Jack Mathews’ “The Trouble With Oscar,” and Sheila Benson’s “Crystal Ball Gazing,” April 10), solved a long-time enigma for me, i.e.: how the academy voting process works.

Fine and fair that the specialty branches determine their own slate of nominees, but downright disturbing that these nominations are then given to the general body for vote with no validated-attendance requirement (except for foreign language, documentary and short films).

How can these voters possibly make an astute and introspective choice if they do not see the films? This disillusioning revelation wiped the shine off Oscar for me.
