Limiting the Hours for Car-Pool Lanes
The car-pool lane on the Costa Mesa Freeway is a waste, most of the day, that is. A car-pool lane is a good idea, but it is overdone.
People do not form car pools to go shopping, to the doctor or to visit grandma. Salesmen do not usually travel in pairs. So that special lane goes unused and empty, while the other lanes are filled to capacity.
Why not limit the car-pool restrictions to those hours when people usually pool their cars? The commute hours of 7 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m. would probably be enough, leaving the other 18 hours free for all to use. Adding one more lane may help to relieve the intolerable freeway congestion.
