SDSU Wins Its 14th Consecutive Baseball Game, 4-0

Catcher Eric Christopherson had three runs batted in and Rob Brown pitched a shutout as San Diego State won its 14th consecutive game, 4-0, over New Mexico in a Western Athletic Conference game at Smith Field Saturday.

Christopherson singled with two out in the fifth inning to score Lance Pinnell, and again in the seventh, also with two out, to score Chuck McInnis and Brian Lutes. Nikco Riesgo hit a solo home run in the fourth to give SDSU the lead, 1-0. Brown (7-3) struck out nine and allowed only two New Mexico baserunners as far as second base.

SDSU is 33-13-1 overall and 11-2 in conference play. New Mexico is 16-19-1 and 4-5.

The University of San Diego split a doubleheader with the University of San Francisco. The Toreros lost the first game, 5-1, but won the second, 18-10.

Four of USF’s five runs in the opener were unearned as USD committed six errors--four in the first two innings that led to four runs.

Greg Weiser (5-5) struck out 10 and snapped a five-game losing streak. James Ferguson (5-5) took the loss for USD.

The Toreros banged out 18 hits in the second game, as Dave Monastero (3-4) earned the win over Juan Galletti (1-3). Sean Baron hit a grand slam in the second inning for USD. Parris Sorianello had 5 RBIs, Dave Rolls and Chuck Graham added 3 and Brian Bainbridge had 2. USD is 22-28 and 5-14. USF is 14-26 and 3-12.

Dave Adamson (5-2) and Rick Nowak (7-4) each earned wins as UC San Diego swept a nonconference doubleheader from visiting Biola, 3-1 and 7-1.

UCSD managed just two hits in the first game but took advantage of a Biola error in the fifth inning and a wild pitch in the sixth.

Nowak pitched a two-hitter in the second game, and Eric Judson was 2 for 4 with a solo home run in the fifth inning. UCSD is 22-12. Biola is 19-22.

Point Loma Nazarene was limited to just two runs as visiting Westmont swept a doubleheader, 3-0 and 8-2.

In the first game, Chad Bethel (6-1) scattered six hits and Mike Kinnaman hit a three-run home run in the second inning to give Westmont the 3-0 victory. Larry Johnson (4-9) was the losing pitcher.

Dan Angull hit a two-run homer to key a seven-run Westmont sixth in the second game. Mike Ashworth (4-3) was the winner and Dave Pierce (2-7) took the loss. Point Loma Nazarene is 11-28. Westmont is 22-14.

SOFTBALL

Patty Hurtt was 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored in the first game and was the winning pitcher in the second game as UC San Diego swept a doubleheader from Whittier, 12-2 and 9-0. UCSD is 28-5-1.

CREW

UCSD won two of three races in the women’s division and split four races in the men’s division in a regatta with Loyola Marymount on the 2,000-meter course at Mission Bay.

HIGH SCHOOL BADMINTON

Hoover’s Bihn Lam and Patrick Henry’s Phonephay Sayavong were individual winners in the Serra Badminton Invitational.

Lam defeated Amp Khounnorha of Patrick Henry, 15-6, 15-11, to win the boys’ division and Sayavong beat Hoover’s Kim Lai, 11-7, 11-0, to win the girls’ division.
