A Sonoma County sheriff’s deputy contracted AIDS seven years after he accidentally jabbed himself with a needle found in a 1981 drug raid, officials said.

Sheriff Dick Michaelsen said Tuesday that, to his knowledge, it was the “first time in history” a law officer had contracted the disease while performing his duties.

Michaelsen said that Deputy Bill Martin, now 47, suffered a series of strokes caused by brain lesions induced by acquired immune deficiency syndrome.
