A Los Angeles police detective who spotted a gunman chasing another man in South-Central Los Angeles Thursday shot and killed the pursuer, who allegedly pointed his revolver at the plainclothes investigator.

Detective Kenneth Alexander was driving to the Southeast Division station about 10:40 a.m. when he saw Octavio Islas, 31, chasing John Walker, 38, down Central Avenue near 107th Street, a police spokesman said.

When Alexander drove up to the pair and ordered Islas to drop the gun, Islas “turned toward the officer and began to raise his revolver in the detective’s direction,” Detective Sid Nuckles said. Alexander then fired two shots.

The dispute between Islas and Walker, both South-Central Los Angeles residents, apparently started when Walker tried to start a conversation with Islas, who was using a public telephone, Nuckles said.
