Incident Closes Part of Winnetka Avenue

A portion of Winnetka Avenue near the West Valley Occupational Center and Pierce College was blocked off for an hour Thursday afternoon while explosives experts from the Los Angeles Police Department investigated a possible bomb.

Detective Mike McDonagh said a 27-year-old man driving a truck along Winnetka flagged down patrol officers about 1 p.m. to say he had found “something you’d like to see.” The man showed the officers a box he said he found on a freeway off-ramp, McDonagh said. The box contained blasting caps.

Bomb squad officers removed the box from the truck without incident, and Winnetka was reopened. The man was taken to West Valley Division for questioning and released, police said.
