Local News in Brief : Unexpected Expenditures Add Up

Share

The City of Lawndale will have to pay $237,350 for land acquisition and $15,000 for architectural services for the city’s ill-fated Civic Center expansion plan, which was rejected by voters on April 12.

It had been anticipated that the costs would be covered by a bond issue for the proposed $5-million project, but because voters rejected the plan, the City Council agreed to pay the expenditures as part of the current budget.

Also among unexpected expenditures approved by the council last week was $135,000 for legal services. The fees were used to defend lawsuits against the Civic Center and to continue the city’s lawsuit against the brokerage companies that handled a speculative securities investment in which the city lost $1.68 million last year.
