L.A. IN 25 YEARS
Just go back 25 years ago, to 1963, and see what people thought life might be like in 1988. They were as naively optimistic as today’s futurists are about 2013. In the past quarter of a century we’ve been spared nuclear war, which was commonly predicted back in 1963. Who would have thought that the archetypal suburban family would nearly disappear? Pollution control and race relations have gone through epochs only to come back to square one. We treat cardiac problems in wondrous new ways, but the world must also contend with a disease unheard of even 10 years ago, AIDS. Our cars are individually more complicated, but our transportation system has changed little since 1963.
Let’s get real. Our problems are human, not technological.
