A fiery automobile crash took the life of a 24-year-old UC San Diego student early Sunday, authorities said.

The accident occurred at 8:20 a.m. when the driver of a car traveling south on Gilman Drive apparently lost control of his vehicle, veered across the northbound lanes, and struck a cement pillar supporting the Interstate 5 overpass, a spokesman for the San Diego County coroner’s office said. The car burst into flames, preventing witnesses from attempting to rescue the driver.

The coroner’s office tentatively identified the driver as Christopher Falge. Because the body was burned beyond recognition, final identification will be made after a check of dental records, the spokesman said.
