An 18-month-old Clairemont girl was admitted to Children’s Hospital on Monday after swallowing a small quantity of methamphetamine she pulled from her mother’s purse, police said.
Cynthia Reed, 23, told police she was asleep in her apartment in the 5100 block of Bowden Avenue when her daughter, Ashley, discovered an eighth of an ounce of methamphetamine in a purse, spokesman Bill Robinson said. The mother, who was arrested, told police that about 400 milligrams of the illegal drug was missing.
Reed told police that the child became agitated and hyperactive and that she decided to drive the girl to a friend’s house in the 6700 block of Benhurst Avenue, where police and paramedics were called at 11:50 a.m.
The toddler was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where vomiting was induced. She was later admitted to Children’s Hospital for observation.
Reed was arrested on suspicion of drug possession, drug possession for sale and child endangerment, Sgt. Dave Kelly said.
Robinson said the county’s Child Protective Services was notified. The girl’s father, a construction worker, was not home during the incident.
