Condor Chick Problem Solved
A leg problem that could have affected the mobility of the first captive-bred California condor chick has been corrected, the San Diego Wild Animal Park said Tuesday.
The chick, named Molloko, had developed splayed legs about a week after its April 29 hatching because it had trouble getting proper footing on the towel in the pen that has been its home since its hatching, officials said.
Last Thursday, condor keepers “hobbled” the chick by wrapping a tiny gauze bandage around its legs. Park spokesman Joel Edelstein said that prevented the chick from slipping and sliding on the towel, which could have aggravated the splayed-leg condition.
The bandage remained for four days. It was removed Monday, and Molloko’s legs have straightened.
