Wooden May Need a Geography Lesson
John Wooden was, without question, an exceptional coach, but he can get a bit sanctimonious. In Thomas Bonk’s story on Jim Harrick (May 10), Wooden is quoted as stressing the importance of getting the good local high school products. “I didn’t believe in getting players from out of the area,” he says.
Oh? From what part of California did he recruit such players as Lew Alcindor, Lucius Allen, Walt Hazzard and Henry Bibby, without whom there would be far fewer championship banners flying at Pauley?
