Ballesteros Disenchanted With European Tour
Ken Schofield, executive director of the Professional Golf Assn.’s European tour, said he will not fine or sanction Spanish star Severiano Ballesteros for “bringing the game to disrepute,” by criticizing the organization.
Ballesteros complained bitterly about the changes made to his home course, Royal Pedrena at Santander, Spain, for this week’s Spanish Open.
“They have watered the greens, not watered the fairways and cut the rough,” Ballesteros said. “It is not the same golf course. I have never been so disoriented in all my life over this course.
“They (PGA officials) never listened to our local greenskeeper. You have players who can’t break par shooting 62s and 63s.”
England’s Mark James won the tournament at 18-under-par 262. Ballesteros finished 17th at 274. Australian journeyman Wayne Riley shot a 61 Saturday to equal the course record set by Ballesteros in Wednesday’s pro-am.
Ballesteros said he is thinking seriously about adjusting his schedule so he can play full-time on the U.S. tour.
