Ramadan : Prayers End Islam’s High Holy Month

An estimated 4,000 Muslims gathered Tuesday at Mile Square Regional Park in Fountain Valley to mark Eid Ul Fitr, a day of prayers as the monthlong Islamic holy month of Ramadan came to a close. A number of Orange County’s Muslims, along with an estimated 970 million worldwide, observed prohibitions against food, drink, tobacco and sex from dawn to sunset, about 13 1/2 hours, for the month which began on April 17. The period marks a time in the year 611 when the prophet Mohammed is said to have received the revelations of the Koran, Islam’s holy scriptures, from the angel Gabriel. Ramadan ended with the sighting of the new moon.
