Because the Santa Rita jail in Pleasanton is jammed beyond capacity, 124 inmates were released Tuesday. A spokesman said the inmates granted early freedom were scheduled for release within 28 days or already had served at least 21% of their sentences. Inmates serving time for violent, sex-related or weapons-related crimes were not eligible for early release, the spokesman added. The Alameda County Board of Supervisors last week approved spending emergency funds to set up portable units to house inmates, but those units will not be available until October.
