Girl Killed in House Fire

Share

I read with concern the story in The Times (Metro, May 14) about the little girl who died in her home during a fire caused by candles which were being used because the electricity had been cut off. Similarly, I can think of other instances where the shut off of utilities, such as water, gas or telephone, has caused suffering or a health hazard.

As a health care professional, I feel tragic irony that we are sometimes criticized by society and government agencies if we do not provide adequate services to the poor. But government agencies and regulated utilities will cut off their services when a bill has not been paid.

For a few dollars, a life was lost. This was shameful.
