McEnroe Gets Mad, Wins
Top-seeded Steffi Graf of West Germany, kicking off the defense of her French Open women’s tennis title, defeated Nathalie Guerree of France 6-0, 6-4 today, and John McEnroe got mad and won his first match in the tournament since 1985.
McEnroe, seeded just 16th as he battles his way back from an injury, beat 21-year-old Alexandr Volkov 7-6, 6-1, 7-6, but only after shouting at himself and glaring at a line judge at a critical point while trailing 3-1 in the first set. “I sure won’t win the tournament playing that way,” McEnroe said later. “I’m not really coming here expecting to win. . . . It’s purely a long shot, but longer shots have happened.”
