A San Diego officer Monday shot at a youth who was interfering with the arrest of an auto-theft suspect, police said.

Shortly before 4 a.m., Officer James Brooks and another patrolman were in the 4400 block of 48th Street when they arrested the a youth after an altercation, police spokesman Dave Cohen said.

About the same time, two other youths, apparently friends of the suspect, jumped in the car that was believed to have been stolen. Brooks saw that one of the men was carrying an object he thought to be a gun, Cohen said. He shot at the youth as the two sped away, Cohen said.

About 50 minutes later, police arrested a 17-year-old juvenile in the 4700 block of University Avenue. He had a .45-caliber handgun, Cohen said. The second youth was not found.

Both suspects’ names were withheld because they are minors. They were taken to Juvenile Hall in San Diego. Charges were still pending Monday, Cohen said.
