Local News in Brief : Weekend Traffic Kills 8

Eight people died in traffic accidents across Los Angeles County during the long Memorial Day weekend, and more than 600 people were arrested in crackdowns on drunken drivers, authorities said Tuesday.

A 50-member Los Angeles police task force arrested 193 people in a four-night sweep beginning in the Wilshire area Thursday night and ending in North Hollywood Sunday night, Sgt. Mike Pattee said.

CHP officers, meanwhile, arrested at least 432 people during routine traffic stops and at sobriety checkpoints as of 6 a.m. Monday, CHP Officer Margaret Sowers said.

Statewide, 30 people died in traffic accidents on the highways between 6 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Monday, Officer Kevin Dougherty said. Last year, 36 people were killed during the same period.

As of 6 a.m. Monday, 1,771 people had been arrested across the state, down from 2,435 during the period last year.
