A truck containing 10,000 gallons of propane backed into a ditch Thursday in San Ysidro, causing firefighters to evacuate the nearby neighborhood while the potentially explosive situation was remedied.

The 60,000-pound tractor-trailer rig became stuck in the culvert at Virginia Avenue and Camino de la Plaza at 6:39 a.m. and could not be moved because of its weight, according to a San Diego Fire Department spokeswoman. Firefighters evacuated a one-block area and set two fire hoses in position while the propane was being transferred to another truck, she said.

After five hours, the fuel was safely transferred and the area was reopened, said the spokeswoman.
