Grease plugged a sewer line in Point Loma Thursday, causing an estimated 6,000 gallons of sewage to flow into the bay near the San Diego Yacht Club.

The sewer main became blocked at 12:30 p.m., forcing effluent out a manhole in the 1800 block of Canon Street, said Maricela Ray of the County Department of Health Services. The sewage flowed down a gutter and into a storm drain that empties into San Diego Bay, she said. The spill was stopped about an hour later.

Signs warning of possible water contamination have been posted for 300 feet on either side of the point where the storm drain empties into the bay, said Ray. Sampling will begin tomorrow and will continue daily to determine when the water is safe for swimming and other contact, she said.
