SDSU’s Smith and Knight Will Play With the Thunder

Two former San Diego State football players--offensive tackle Kevin Smith and linebacker Ron Knight--have signed with the San Diego Thunder of the new World Indoor Football League, their agent, Paul Bartelt of Newport Beach, said. They both played for the Aztecs last year. Knight will play on the defensive line for the Thunder.

YACHTING

The third BMW Sailing Classic will be on San Diego Bay this morning beginning at 11:30.

The 10-mile race will start at Harbor Island and finish at Shelter Island. A total of 156 yachts are entered. The race will be scored under the arbitrary handicap system. Last year’s winner, Rick Reynolds, will defend his title.

BASEBALL

Doug Davis and Tim Ellis of Grossmont College have been selected in baseball’s amateur draft.

Davis, a freshman first and third baseman, was picked by the Seattle Mariners. He hit 14 home runs and drove in 52 runs this season. Ellis, a sophomore left-handed pitcher formerly of Ramona High School, has signed with the Chicago Cubs.

Donnie Young, a sophomore outfielder drafted by the Cleveland Indians Wednesday, became the first player in Grossmont College history to earn All-American status, it was announced. Young had 131 hits in 80 games over two seasons.

TRACK AND FIELD

Matt Clayton, San Diego State senior, finished 17th in a field of 20 runners in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA track and field championships in Eugene, Ore. Clayton, a graduate of Mar Vista High, finished in 30 minutes 14.5 seconds.
