An 18-year-old man who had graduated from Alemany High School on Saturday was killed Sunday in Sylmar in a head-on collision that injured two others, Los Angeles police said.

John Farenbaugh, of Sylmar, was driving his 1986 Toyota pick-up truck at high speed in the 14000 block of Foothill Boulevard near Cobalt Street about 5 p.m. when his car veered into the opposite lane and crashed into a 1969 Mustang, said Officer Bill Mulvihill.

Driving the Mustang was a 43-year-old Pacoima woman who was in extremely critical condition at Holy Cross Hospital after undergoing surgery for head and abdominal injuries. Her name was withheld pending notification of relatives, said Officer Rodney Gregson.

Farenbaugh’s passenger, David Fierro, 18, of Sylmar, who also graduated from Alemany High this weekend, suffered head cuts and was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was in stable condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Neither of the young men were wearing seat belts, Gregson said. Officers said they did not know if the woman in the other car had been wearing a seat belt.
