American Andy Hampsten took the overall lead in the Tour of Italy cycling championship with a second-place finish at Bormio, Italy, in the 14th stage won by Eric Breukink of the Netherlands.

The Dutch cyclist completed the cold and wet 75-mile stage through the Italian Alps in 3 hours 53 minutes 12 seconds, recording an average speed of 19 m.p.h.

Hampsten, who began the day in fifth place, earned the pink jersey of the overall leader by crossing the finish line seven seconds behind Breukink, who is in second place, just 15 seconds back.
